This lively hands on workshop is designed to enhance the student’s awareness of goodness, truth, and beauty by taking an eight week deep dive into the world of Art. We explore several different mediums (material or technique) giving opportunity to learn to use them appropriately and creatively. In addition, the recognition of the seven elements of Art become part of the student’s toolbox in recognizing and creating beauty. The workshop offers a wide range of experiences involving fine motor control. There is practice in drawing, painting, cutting, pasting, sculpting, building, coloring, folding, etc. Observation skills are honed as conversation between students and teacher key into details of color, perspective, and design. Weekly projects are enjoyed together in class one time per week, and then completed on their own during the week following class. Art History is introduced as artists, cultures and their paintings are discussed. Students are encouraged to follow directions while being creative and unique. Boundaries are set to increase creativity, never to stifle it. Excellent quality supplies are encouraged which enable the student to create freely without difficulty arising from faulty equipment. Parents are encouraged to help students prepare for successful class times by helping collect supplies beforehand.

Charlotte Mason believed in nurturing the child to see beauty in the world in which they live. She said in relation to children’s learning, “Find beauty, study beauty, declare beauty.” Yes!
