Come along with me while I teach you to teach your child to read using historic methods. Reading Foundations is about learning all the building blocks of the English language and preparing the student’s body and brain for learning. In this class, I will model the skills for you and your child, and you will implement the activities at home the remainder of the week. In each class, we will explore new phonograms, spelling rules and foundational neurological skills that were once a normal part of childhood and the classical classroom experience.

Second, third and late-blooming fourth graders are welcome in this class. We will meet once per week for 90 minutes. Students should have a working knowledge of the alphabet before beginning this class. Even those who are reading multi-syllable words will benefit from an increased understanding of the English language that will serve them well at higher reading levels. In this class, we will begin with the letter A and work through the alphabet. Once we complete the alphabet, we will move on to multi-letter phonograms. Spelling rules will be sprinkled throughout. Each class will have a focus on a specific neurological skill. I will train you to assess these skills in your own student while giving you activities to help improve each area of functioning for your whole family. This class is similar to RF II, but our pace will be faster, which will allow us to cover more phonograms and spelling rules over the course of the school year. This class will have the addition of spelling lists and skills quizzes tested in class as well as fluency skills practice at home. We will also introduce Reading Rainbow style book reports this year.

The first portion of class will include both you and your student. For the last fifteen to twenty minutes, your student will be free to go have a snack, play, etc. and the focus will shift to you, the parent. We will begin with a Q&A time, then, I will introduce the week’s skill focus. I will explain the skill, what part it plays in learning and how you will address it at home. Sometimes I will ask you to send me pictures or videos of your child doing these activities so that I can further guide you. Along the way, you will develop a more complete understanding of how learning works and come away better equipped to confidently direct your own homeschool.
