Part fitness, part phonics - This course is for students to develop academic proficiencies using both body and brain. Laying the groundwork for the study of Logic during middle school, this class for 4-6th graders will include word analysis, comprehension skills, and the importance of skilled movement for making neurological connections.
Using Reasoning & Reading: Beginner as our primary text, the course will also include special exercises and activities to enhance the whole child's learning skill sets. This class will meet for 50-60 minutes starting at 3:30pm EST on Monday and Wednesday. Students will learn basic movement patterns to support neurological readiness and are expected to participate in daily exercises at home. We will cover the most common mistakes students make in posture as well as in decoding new words. We will utilize common Greek and Latin roots, their derivatives, and related tools such as dictionaries and a thesaurus, learning to interpret texts and connect the dots of meaning that may not always be immediately clear.
As the year progresses, we will move from identifying word, sentence and paragraph meaning, to then study fact vs. opinion, relevance, syllogisms and inferences. Your student will come away from Reading, Reasoning and Rhythm a better, more thorough and at ease reader, who is prepared to benefit from the Great Books.
Prerequisites: The student must have already had or be actively involved in a grammar curriculum that includes the parts of speech, parts of a sentence, subject, predicate, independent clauses and dependent clauses.
Required Materials: Books and supplies are not included in the purchase of the course. These resources are listed to help inform your decision-making as you make course selections and build your course schedule. Please reach out to the instructor if you have any questions about materials.
Angelique Chaverri holds an MSEd in special education from Missouri State University and a BA in psychology from Southwest Baptist University. Angelique has spent her adult life working to understand the underpinnings of learning. After initial interests in physical therapy and neuropsychology, she found her way into special education. Four years after entering the public school system, Angelique went into private practice. She worked for a year in a learning clinic under a neuropsychologist before starting her own business in 2005. Angelique then began cross-training in various therapy modalities usually used by medically based therapists in hospitals and rehab clinics.
For the past 15 years, Angelique has specialized in using standardized assessments to identify the underlying causes of learning difficulties and has designed individualized programs to improve learning while guiding parents and teachers in how to modify the learning environment and instruction to the student’s individual needs. Angelique has provided training for schools, parents, and hospitals. She firmly believes in teaching students to use their strengths to enjoy, not fear, the learning process.
This year, Angelique will celebrate 15 years of marriage to her wonderful husband. She is a homeschooling mom to two fantastic boys. When avoiding housework, Angelique prefers to be outside hiking, biking, kayaking, camping, tending her medicinal herb and veggie gardens, hobby farming, and learning about regenerative agriculture and classical physical education.
