Adult students in Year 1 through 6 will learn together in the Iconography Apprenticeship for Adults- All Levels. Students will prayerfully complete an icon of the Man of Sorrows on a 9X12 board, using the traditional media of egg tempera and having the option of learning to gesso during a Saturday class or purchasing a board suitable for egg tempera. Additionally, students will complete many practice drawings and studies on toned paper, in their sketchbooks, and on small practice boards. Students maintain their “Year Status” in this course and work on skills appropriate to their level in guided assignments. Theology and scholarship are also integral to the Apprenticeship Program. This year, we will read and discuss Saint John of Damascus's defense of icons and learn about the Iconoclasm Controversy of the 8th-9th centuries.
Required Materials: Books and supplies are not included in the purchase of the course. These resources are listed to help inform your decision-making as you make course selections and build your course schedule. Please reach out to the instructor if you have any questions about materials.

Maria Sider-Rose began painting icons over 30 years ago when she came back from Russia and the Baltics (as a student and Fulbright Scholar) Once back in the states, she was able to travel to learn from different iconography teachers and completed an MDiv, specializing in iconography, at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Maria and her family of seven attend Saint Moses the Black Orthodox Mission Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she has been blessed by His Grace Bishop Thomas to serve in the ministry of iconography. In addition to taking icon commissions, Maria greatly enjoys walking with students of all ages on the journey to see better and more intentionally, through God’s grace.
