Scholé Academy Chess Club

Students, do you have some knowledge of, skill in, and passion for the game of chess?

If so, this is the club for you! Now you have a chance to hone your existing chess-playing skills among other Scholé Academy students. Should you choose to join, you can engage in friendly competition with other players of approximately comparable skill (not necessarily of identical age).

Parents, this is an informal, unofficial club. So player ratings are neither required nor applied.

However, all active participants must know and understand the basic rules of chess in order to compete. These rules include: starting places; legal movement vs. illegal movement; pawn’s ‘move’ vs. pawn’s ‘attack’; pawn’s first-move privilege; pawn promotion; en passant; castling, check; checkmate. Observers (non-active participants) may be welcomed to attend in reasonable proportion to active participants. Session time will be given only to actual game play, not instruction, for the sake of playing students. For a chess program teaching the basics of how to play, please consider Mr. Benson’s summer course: “Fundamental Chess & Chess Notation.” The summer course is designed for the benefit of beginners wishing to learn rules, tactics, and much more. It is taught by Mr. Benson through Scholé Academy.

  • Wanted: chess players aged 11 to 14
  • Qualifications: game rules known and understood
  • Reward: the satisfaction of games well played and well observed

Please direct any and all questions about the club or about the course to [email protected].
