In this semester‑long course, students will be introduced to captivating Russian fairy tales, explore the lives of remarkable Russian saints, and learn well‑known Russian proverbs. Several of the tales highlight winter themes—hardship, “winter blessings,” and the stark beauty of extreme cold—while the saints studied will be those commemorated during the fall and winter months.
Each month, the class will engage in a focused discussion on a prominent Russian Orthodox saint commemorated during that time. For example, in September, students will study St. Sergius of Radonezh in depth. At the beginning of each class session, students will copy and reflect on a Russian proverb, learning to appreciate its meaning and cultural significance.
Required Materials: Books and supplies are not included in the purchase of the course. These resources are listed to help inform your decision-making as you make course selections and build your course schedule. Please reach out to the instructor if you have any questions about materials.
