The Catholic influence on art is notable from the Middle Ages to today. This course will explore Catholic artists and their art as students view, analyze, and discuss a variety of selections from Medieval Art, the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism, and Modern Art.
Taught not by an artist, but by a lifetime history teacher, this course will uncover the fascinating stories and history behind the artists and their art. Students do not need to have a background in art. They will just need good “eyes” and an open mind. Artists to be enjoyed include Eadfrith of Lindisfarne, the artists of the Book of Kells, Hildegard of Bingen, Giotto, Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Goya, Millet, Dalí, Warhol and many more.
This class will be rich and relaxed, with no outside homework other than viewing and responding to many art pieces. Class participation will require attentiveness to the art. Discussion, analysis, and enjoyment can be expected!
Required Materials: Books and supplies are not included in the purchase of the course. These resources are listed to help inform your decision-making as you make course selections and build your course schedule. Please reach out to the instructor if you have any questions about materials.
