This course is designed as an introductory course for upper-elementary students and early middle school students in their study of the Old Testament. While it is expected that enrolling students have some familiarity with biblical scriptures, this is not required.
The course text, God's Great Covenant, Old Testament 1, is wonderfully engaging and punctuated with just the right amount of historical and scholarly content to interest curious students. Young students will learn to engage with scripture through picture journaling and dialoguing with peers. Students will be asked to read portions of text (or, at minimum be able follow along with text), join in dialogue with instructor and peers, reflect on questions and pose their own, memorize some scripture passages, and practice the oral tradition of “re-telling” scriptural accounts with accuracy and interest.
Music has been specially designed by the instructor to aid in memorizing scripture with ease. For pre-published previews of music samples, you are invited to visit www.elizabethkaufman.org/ggc .
Please note: A primary goal of the course is to encourage and equip students to dialogue together with family and peers about their biblical discovery and learning. To ensure a rich Socratic experience, a 4 student minimum enrollment is required. If, for any reason, this enrollment minimum is not met, enrolled students will be refunded and/or transferred to another course, per handbook guidelines.
Required Materials: Books and supplies are not included in the purchase of the course. These resources are listed to help inform your decision-making as you make course selections and build your course schedule. Please reach out to the instructor if you have any questions about materials.
RECOMMENDED Parents may consider purchasing "God's Great Covenant Old Testament Timeline and Map Set" from Classical Academic Press. This is not a required resource, but it is recommended as it will be a helpful tool for your student.

Elizabeth Kaufman holds a M.Ed. and earned her BA in Spanish from Hope College with minors in Music (piano performance) and Elementary Ed.. A missional mindset led her to work in various countries, teaching art and music in an American School in the Dominican Republic, grades 2 and 3 in a British school in Tanzania, and Spanish at a Montessori school in Michigan. Elizabeth went on to choose motherhood and homeschooling as a full-time pursuit and has loved teaching her four sons at home for the past eight years. Throughout this time, she has grown increasingly committed to Classical Christian education and has developed a love for “living” literature and biblical scholarship. She has also combined her love of music and scripture to compose several collections of songs for students and families to learn scripture together and to sing through liturgical seasons. She believes that every course of study is an invitation to witness God’s redemptive work in the world, to be formed and transformed by it, and to engage with Him in it.
Elizabeth lives in Kenya where her husband teaches biblically-based church discipleship and her sons enjoy living and learning “in the bush.” When not teaching or studying classical ed, you can find Elizabeth trail running, composing new music, doing laundry, hosting meals for friends and travelers, or attempting (poorly) to ride motorbikes with her boys. You can listen to her music for learning scripture at www.musictomemorize.org.
