Placement Process One critical factor for restful learning is the proper placement of students. If you are unsure which level is the best fit for your student, reach out to the instructor you are considering. Once registered, anticipate contact regarding placement evaluations from instructors by May 15th and throughout the summer. Students must be enrolled to enter the placement process. Students in this course will enjoy a clear introduction to Latin grammar and reading that will delight them and cultivate in them the wonder of language. Students study the first two noun declensions, the first two verb conjugations, the present, imperfect, and future tenses, and other parts of speech (adjectives, prepositions, and adverbs) as they learn to read and translate basic Latin sentences. They also acquire a Latin vocabulary of 240 words and learn many English words derived from Latin. As a step beyond just an exposure to the language, this course trains students in grammar, vocabulary, and English derivatives.

This course is designed to:
The ideal student for this course will be in 4th-5th grade (6th grade students are welcome to enroll) and developmentally ready to engage in an appropriately leveled corporate classroom. While not required, it is helpful for students to have at least a preliminary understanding of the basics of English grammar. This includes knowing how to recognize the following parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, preposition. Familiarity with the basic functionality of the following parts of a sentence is also helpful: subject, direct object, object of the preposition. Mastery of these concepts upon entry in the course is not expected.
While the primary text will be Latin for Children Primer A and History Reader, the instructors will be adapting and augmenting the curriculum as they see best for the learning objectives of the course. Additional materials may include worksheets, in-class games the students will prepare for, and spoken Latin activities. As such, students should be prepared to regularly print PDF files supplied by their teacher well in advance of the class in which they will be used.

Heather Brewer received her B.A. in Classics (Greek and Latin) and Italian from the University of Virginia. Since graduating, she taught Latin in Richmond, VA, for three years, where she met her husband Nathan. They welcomed their first child, a boy, this March. While educated in the grammar-translation method of Latin-learning, Heather developed a love for spoken Latin after attending a full-immersion program in Rome during high school, and she enjoys incorporating elements of spoken Latin into her lessons.
Heather currently lives in Richmond and is active in the Anglican church. In her free time, she loves birdwatching, crocheting, sewing, and watching old movies.

Melissa Browne holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, and is certified TESL Instructor. She taught privately as an English teacher in China, Taiwan, and in Peru for 10 years where she also studied Waldorf pedagogy. She is currently a brick-and-mortar Classical Elementary school teacher in Peterborough, Ontario where she teaches grade 3/4 with Classical Academic Press' Latin, Writing, and Grammar curriculum. In the afternoons, she tutors students in Latin, writing, grammar, spelling, Spanish, Singapore Math, and literature studies. Melissa also teaches Sunday school at her local church and periodically teaches ESL with the local college and university. Her students, both online and in-person, are an incredible encouragement and blessing.
Long Canadian winters find her enjoying board games and books, while summers are spent swimming at the beach and tending her garden. Hospitality and shared meals are a year-round joy. Melissa lives in Lakefield, Ontario, with her husband and two children, and makes occasional trips to Peru. She enjoys traveling, reading, and cooking, and delights in serving the body of Christ alongside her husband while watching their boys grow into godly young men.
Amanda Reeves has a BA in Greek and Latin from Stanford University, where she received recognition in her department for both her enthusiasm for the classical world as well as her excellence in scholarship. In her 10+ years as an educator, she has fiercely held to the belief that every student can fall in love with Latin and has celebrated each of the many times it has happened in her classroom. As Dean of the Lower School at Scholé, she supports teachers as they develop classrooms and curricula to help Scholé’s youngest students cultivate a love of learning in their pursuit of restful classical education. Having learned Latin online as a homeschooled student, Amanda is passionate about distance learning and enjoys integrating traditional grammar and translation methods with spoken Latin to produce the best educational experience for her students. When she is not traveling the world, she can be found in New Haven, Connecticut, waxing poetic about the Parthenon Marbles and Stanford football, always with a strong cup of coffee in hand.
First, read the available course descriptions, noting prerequisites, target grades, and course objectives. If you think your student is prepared for the course, go ahead and register. After registration, a placement assessment may be provided to students, depending on the course and the student’s previous enrollment with Scholé Academy. Registration is finalized when the student’s placement assessment has been returned by the course instructor with placement confirmation.
Make sure they don’t conflict with other activities in your schedule or other courses you are purchasing. Our system will not catch double-bookings!
