Placement Process One critical factor for restful learning is the proper placement of students. If you are unsure which level is the best fit for your student, reach out to the instructor you are considering. Once registered, anticipate contact regarding placement evaluations from instructors by May 15th and throughout the summer. Students must be enrolled to enter the placement process. Early placement exams may allow time for tutoring or additional review based on the outcomes. See more about placement evaluations in our Student-Parent Handbook.
Latin Placement Process For registered students, please anticipate contact regarding placement evaluations from instructors by May 15th and throughout the summer. Students must be enrolled in a Latin course to receive a placement assessment. Latin classes have a detailed and specific placement process. Learn more about the Latin placement process here.
Students in the Latin for Children B course continue their study of Latin grammar and reading while also continuing to delight in the Latin language. Students study the third noun declension, the third verb conjugation, and all remaining parts of speech (pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, adverbs, and conjunctions). During the course, students read and translate basic Latin paragraphs and simple stories, putting their knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary to work. They also acquire a Latin vocabulary of another 240 words and learn many English words derived from these Latin words. As a step beyond just an exposure to the language, this course trains students in grammar, vocabulary, and English derivatives in a lively, interactive way.

The ideal student for this course will be entering 5th-6th grade and developmentally ready to engage in an appropriately leveled corporate classroom. Rising 7th graders are welcome in Latin for Children B, though they may also wish to consider our upper-school Latin 1 course, which progresses at a faster and more challenging pace. If your student is outside the target grade range for this class, or if you have further questions, read more about the Latin placement process here.
While the primary text will be Latin for Children Primer B and History Reader, the instructors will be adapting and augmenting the curriculum as they see best for the learning objectives of the course. Additional materials may include worksheets, in-class games the students will prepare for, and spoken Latin activities. As such, students should be prepared to regularly print PDF files supplied by their teacher well in advance of the class in which they will be used.
“The interaction of the (Latin for Children B) class turned Latin from something that she had to do, which she usually did last, into something that she wanted to do, and now does before her other schoolwork. I no longer have to cajole or press her to study her Latin. What a godsend! Thank you!” —Scholé Academy Latin for Children B Parent

Optional Resources:
Heather Brewer received her B.A. in Classics (Greek and Latin) and Italian from the University of Virginia. Since graduating, she taught Latin in Richmond, VA, for three years, where she met her husband Nathan. They welcomed their first child, a boy, this March. While educated in the grammar-translation method of Latin-learning, Heather developed a love for spoken Latin after attending a full-immersion program in Rome during high school, and she enjoys incorporating elements of spoken Latin into her lessons.
Heather currently lives in Richmond and is active in the Anglican church. In her free time, she loves birdwatching, crocheting, sewing, and watching old movies.
Amanda Reeves has a BA in Greek and Latin from Stanford University, where she received recognition in her department for both her enthusiasm for the classical world as well as her excellence in scholarship. In her 10+ years as an educator, she has fiercely held to the belief that every student can fall in love with Latin and has celebrated each of the many times it has happened in her classroom. As Dean of the Lower School at Scholé, she supports teachers as they develop classrooms and curricula to help Scholé’s youngest students cultivate a love of learning in their pursuit of restful classical education. Having learned Latin online as a homeschooled student, Amanda is passionate about distance learning and enjoys integrating traditional grammar and translation methods with spoken Latin to produce the best educational experience for her students. When she is not traveling the world, she can be found in New Haven, Connecticut, waxing poetic about the Parthenon Marbles and Stanford football, always with a strong cup of coffee in hand.
