Placement Process One critical factor for restful learning is the proper placement of students. If you are unsure which level is the best fit for your student, reach out to the instructor you are considering. Once registered, anticipate contact regarding placement evaluations from instructors by May 15th and throughout the summer. Students must be enrolled to enter the placement process. Early placement exams may allow time for tutoring or additional review based on the outcomes. See more about placement evaluations in our Student-Parent Handbook.
Latin Placement Process For registered students, please anticipate contact regarding placement evaluations from instructors by May 15th and throughout the summer. In this third-year Latin course, students learn to read and translate longer Latin paragraphs. They study the fourth and fifth noun declensions, the present system for third and fourth conjugation verbs, the perfect system for all four conjugations, and review all the parts of speech in Latin. Students also acquire a Latin vocabulary of another 240 words and learn many English words derived from these Latin words. As a step beyond just an exposure to the language, this course trains students in grammar, vocabulary, and English derivatives in a lively, interactive way.
Watch Lower School Latin Lead Teacher, Amanda Reeves Explain Latin for Children at Scholé Academy!
The course is designed to:
The ideal student for this course is a rising 6th-7th grader who is developmentally ready to engage in an appropriately leveled corporate classroom. They are able to demonstrate mastery of the material of Latin for Children A and Latin for Children B assumed at the beginning of this course. This mastery can be demonstrated either through successful completion of the Latin for Children B course at Scholé Academy or through successful completion of a placement exam. Rising 8th graders should consider enrolling in our upper-school Latin 1 course, which is targeted at rising 7th–9th graders and progresses at a faster pace. If your student is outside the target grade range for this class, or if you have further questions, read more about the Latin placement process here.
While the primary texts will be the Latin for Children Primer C and History Reader, the instructors will be adapting and augmenting the curriculum as they see best for the learning objectives of the course. Students will have the opportunity to practice their knowledge of new grammar concepts in a variety of ways, both in and beyond the primer exercises. Additional materials may include worksheets, in-class games for which the students will prepare, and spoken Latin activities. As such, students should be prepared to regularly print PDF files supplied by their teacher well in advance of the class in which they will be used.
“My son gained a renewed love of Latin and a desire to go on. He had plans to stop after this year and now plans to continue Latin study. The instructor gave him special attention in an area of weakness. He also liked the social element and a chance to witness that others his age were Latin students. My son says the class was perfect!” - Scholé Academy Latin for Children C Parent

Amanda Reeves has a BA in Greek and Latin from Stanford University, where she received recognition in her department for both her enthusiasm for the classical world as well as her excellence in scholarship. In her 10+ years as an educator, she has fiercely held to the belief that every student can fall in love with Latin and has celebrated each of the many times it has happened in her classroom. As Dean of the Lower School at Scholé, she supports teachers as they develop classrooms and curricula to help Scholé’s youngest students cultivate a love of learning in their pursuit of restful classical education. Having learned Latin online as a homeschooled student, Amanda is passionate about distance learning and enjoys integrating traditional grammar and translation methods with spoken Latin to produce the best educational experience for her students. When she is not traveling the world, she can be found in New Haven, Connecticut, waxing poetic about the Parthenon Marbles and Stanford football, always with a strong cup of coffee in hand.
