This course will provide an introduction to the literature of the Middle Ages of Europe, the Christian civilization spanning more than 1,000 years and the foundation of so much of what came later. Our literary fare will be varied -- poetry, drama, epic, story, sermon, even riddles -- and the great themes of life will never be far from our attention. What themes? Why, sin for starters. It can be as beguiling and tempting as it is ugly and damning. But sin has neither the last nor the most important thing to say, ever since the first coming of Christ and now all creation awaits His second. We shall see the great drama and comedy of human life in this world -- an antechamber to the everlasting life to come -- played out, from king to peasant, from monastic to knight, on the stage of the literature of the Middle Ages.
