Biography
Maria Welch holds a B.A. in Classics from Kings College London, and a PGDip in Theology from Oxford University. Maria only really fell in love with Latin after completing her B.A., when she had the opportunity to study Latin via the Active or ‘Direct’ Method at the Accademia Vivarium Novum in Rome. This method combines pedagogical elements from a Classical training in Grammar and Rhetoric (from a time when learning was conducted in Latin exclusively), with Modern language learning techniques. She went on to complete an MA in Ancient Philology at the Polis Institute in Jerusalem, where she studied New Testament Greek and Hebrew via the Direct Method. Maria is passionate about sharing with students her love of living Latin and Greek, which she considers to be the keys to the literary treasury of the Classical tradition. Maria previously taught and tutored for Scholé for 4 years, before moving on to teach Theology and Philosophy in a brick-and-mortar school. She is also trained in and practices the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a beautiful approach to religious formation for children, based on Montessori. She has now returned to her role as a tutor for Scholé, alongside home-educating her two young daughters.
