American Short Stories: A Century of the Best

American Short Stories: a Century of the Best offers a setting where students can enjoy the love of reading together. Students will read various short stories over the course of the year discussing them in an interactive setting with attention given to specific topics and those that interest the class most based upon each story. We will examine the writing styles and the layer of meaning the author intends the reader to experience.

The thought-provoking short stories in American Short Stories: a Century of the Best provide students with many different themes and perspectives to analyze and discuss. A short story is a potent learning device in a small package and an accommodating source of English instruction for students of several learning styles. With an anthology of short stories like this one, students will delve deeply into story archetypes, narrative devices, and literary elements.

Discussions will be thought-provoking intended to expose students to the elements of literature, teach literary analysis, and grow rhetorical insight within the context of American History. Through our student management system _Canvas, _students will be able to informally continue to converse about the book with their peers on our class discussion boards. This informal writing of thoughts and insights into the plot of the story will further enrich the learning. For each quarter, students will be asked to choose from an array of culminating activities that will enhance learning and allow further discovery through creative expression. Presentations for these culminating projects will be given during class time.

American Short Stories: a Century of the Best will be an opportunity for students to value one another as readers and learners. Reading in turn becomes a social activity, and this encourages them to keep reading, increasing their comprehension and the ability to express their thoughts.

Presbytera Maria Koulianos, Principal, has been an educator for over 25 years, loving every minute, with vast experiences in both public and private schools as a classroom teacher, a developer and implementer of learning programs for students, and an area administrator. She earned her bachelor of science in education from Indiana University with certifications in elementary education, 7/8 non-departmental, language arts 1–9, and computer education K–12. She holds a master of divinity and a master of theology from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, where she wrote her thesis, “The Annunciation of the Theotokos from a Liturgical Perspective.” Presbytera Maria and her husband, Father Dionysios, live in the greater Springfield area where he is the Dean of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield, MA. As an educator, she hopes to inspire her students to love literature and become lifelong learners. As principal, she is a servant-leader who is charged with building a community that supports students and parents striving for Orthodox restful classical education.

Red checkmarkComputer: You will need a stable, reliable computer, running with a processor with a speed of 1 GHz or better on one of the following operating systems: Mac OS X with Mac OS 10.7 or later; Windows 8, 7, Vista (with SP1 or later), or XP (with SP3 or later). We do not recommend using an iPad or other tablet for joining classes. An inexpensive laptop or netbook would be much better solutions, as they enable you to plug an Ethernet cable directly into your computer. Please note that Chromebooks are allowed but not preferred, as they do not support certain features of the Zoom video conference software such as breakout sessions and annotation, which may be used by our teachers for class activities.

Red checkmarkHigh-Speed Internet Connection: You will also need access to high-speed Internet, preferably accessible via Ethernet cable right into your computer. Using Wi-Fi may work, but will not guarantee you the optimal use of your bandwidth. The faster your Internet, the better. We recommend using a connection with a download/upload speed of 5/1 Mbps or better. You can test your Internet connection here.

  3. Open and run the installer on your computer.
  4. In August, students will be provided with instructions and a link for joining their particular class.
