Iconography Apprenticeship Year 2 SRS

In this 2nd of 6 Years of the Iconography Apprenticeship program, students of the Iconography Apprenticeship Year 2 will gain mastery in the execution of the slightly-turned face and begin to learn the bust (waist-and-up).  To this end, students will:

  • Complete a large (12X16) icon, ideally on a traditionally-gessoed board, with gilding, ideally.
  • Practice other slightly-turned faces and busts and sketches of Christ icons in their sketchbooks and on toned paper.

Art History and Iconology:

  • Identify different icons of Christ, discuss the theology of the imagery
  • There will be more reading than in Year 1.  The instructor will provide readings.

The Apprenticeship program is skills-based, meaning that students will be equipped, over time and with the grace of God, to do their own analysis of a traditional icon or icon-type, develop a drawing, plan the colors, and “write” an icon on their own, yet within the holy Tradition.  This is in contrast to a week-long iconography camp or class, where you would receive the drawing and board and detailed instructions at every stage but minimal practical knowledge of how to proceed without the teacher’s guidance.

**3 Key Skills.  **The student will be able to demonstrate the following from memory by the end of the school year, in a one-on-one meeting with the instructor.

  1. Geometry of the slightly-turned (askance) face
  2. Highlighting a slightly-turned face in black and white (on gray tinted paper)
  3. Identifying the meaning of iconographic elements

Randi Sider-Rose

[email protected]

Randi Maria Sider-Rose's journey into iconography began in Russia and Latvia, where she had been a highschool exchange student, college student, and after college- Fulbright Scholar. In 1998 she came back to the states and was able to travel to learn from different iconography teachers. Since then, she has married Michael Sider-Rose and completed an MDiv, specializing in iconography, at the University of Chicago Divinity School.

As well as taking commissions from churches and individuals, Randi (aka Maria, as in Saint Maria of Paris) loves to walk with students aged 9-97 on the journey of learning to see better and more intentionally, using this “prayer of the hands” to grow in holiness, with God’s grace. Michael, Maria, and their 5 kids attend Saint Moses the Black Orthodox Mission Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she has been blessed by His Grace Bishop Thomas to serve in the ministry of iconography.

Red checkmarkComputer: You will need a stable, reliable computer, running with a processor with a speed of 1 GHz or better on one of the following operating systems: Mac OS X with Mac OS 10.7 or later; Windows 8, 7, Vista (with SP1 or later), or XP (with SP3 or later). We do not recommend using an iPad or other tablet for joining classes. An inexpensive laptop or netbook would be much better solutions, as they enable you to plug an Ethernet cable directly into your computer. Please note that Chromebooks are allowed but not preferred, as they do not support certain features of the Zoom video conference software such as breakout sessions and annotation, which may be used by our teachers for class activities.

Red checkmarkHigh-Speed Internet Connection: You will also need access to high-speed Internet, preferably accessible via Ethernet cable right into your computer. Using Wi-Fi may work, but will not guarantee you the optimal use of your bandwidth. The faster your Internet, the better. We recommend using a connection with a download/upload speed of 5/1 Mbps or better. You can test your Internet connection here.

Red checkmarkWebcam: You may use an external webcam or one that is built in to the computer. Webcam Recommendations: Good (PC only) | Best (Mac and PC)

Red checkmarkHeadset: We recommend using a headset rather than a built-in microphone and speakers. Using a headset reduces the level of background noise heard by the entire class. Headset Recommendations: USB | 3.5mm

Red checkmarkZoom: We use a web conferencing software called Zoom for our classes, which enables students and teachers to gather from around the globe face to face in real time. Zoom is free to download and easy to use. unnamed-e1455142229376 To download Zoom:

  1. Visit zoom.us/download.
  2. Click to download the first option listed, Zoom Client for Meetings.
  3. Open and run the installer on your computer.
  4. In August, students will be provided with instructions and a link for joining their particular class.

Red checkmarkScanner: In this class, students frequently submit homework assignments by scanning pages from their workbooks. Students and/or their parents should have easy access to a scanner and the ability to use it.
