With this one-book, year-long, once-a-week course, we will explore a monumental achievement of history and theology, one that has had a lasting influence on the West: Augustine's City of God. Written in the wake of Rome's sack at the hands of the Visigoth king Alaric and his armies, Augustine sought to defend the City of God and its founder Christ Jesus, against pagan detractors and answer those who wondered why turning to the faith had not saved Rome. Though focusing on the rise of Rome, he reflects upon the entirety of history, from Genesis to his own day, as he contrasts the City of Man, which shall pass, with the everlasting City of God. The City of God remains an important touchstone Christians today who, as much as in the 5th Century, live out their lives as citizens of two cities.
