This course offers an introduction to the history of the Middle Ages in Europe, from the conversion of the Roman Empire to the Christian faith, the fall of the Empire in the West, and the rise of a distinctively Christian civilization in Europe to the year of 1500 A.D. The period can be broken into Early and Later or even Early, High, and Later. No matter how we divide the time period, it will become clear that the dismissive one of the Dark Ages, a pejorative cast out by serious scholarship, is hardly fitting but a propagandistic term crafted by those, among others, who, dismissive of more than 1,000 years of history, thought they turned on the lights with the Enlightenment. It is to that history to which we will turn our attention.
Required Materials: Books and supplies are not included in the purchase of the course. These resources are listed to help inform your decision-making as you make course selections and build your course schedule. Please reach out to the instructor if you have any questions about materials.
