Following a continuous, unfolding narrative of Western Civilization, Ancient History is a yearlong study through the histories of Ancient Greece and Rome. Reading a curation of primary source documents, we begin with the mythic past and move into the concrete particulars of history. Visual art, lyric and epic poetry, tragedy, natural philosophy, and historical and political documents will inform our discovery of how a small group of peoples would come to shape the world. Along the way, we will chart the birth and spread of Christianity, while also discussing the development of education, philosophy, and material culture.
Class time will include Socratic discussion, reading, and reflection. Out of class time will include reading and response to reading with some weekly assignments and quarterly projects.
Bundling this course with Ancient World Literature is recommended.
